History of PsychodramaPsychodrama is a practice based on therapy, philosophy, and methodology developed by Jacob Moreno, M.D. that uses action methods of enactment, sociometry, group dynamics, role theory, and systems analysis to facilitate constructive change in individuals and groups through the development of new perceptions or reorganizations of old cognitive patters and impacting changes in behavior. Moreno immigrated to the United States from Vienna, Austria in 1925. Moreno developed and began to publish his theories in the mid 1920's. Currently there are more than 400 certified practitioners and trainers throughout the US and many more throughout the world.

What is Psychodrama?Psychodrama is an active and creative therapeutic approach that uses guided drama and role playing to work through problems. Psychodrama can be effective individually or in a group (sociodrama), and is sometimes offered in mental health programs, schools and businesses.
During a psychodrama session, participants reenact specific scenes and experiences with guidance from a director. These scenes may include past situations, dreams and preparations for future events. In a group setting, other participants play the roles of significant others or the audience, offering support and bringing to the surface underlying beliefs and issues. The goals of psychodrama are to grow deep roots of self-compassion leading to inner peace with an eventual goal of world peace. As Moreno says, "A truly therapeutic procedure can not have less an objective than the whole of mankind (humankind)." Sessions can last from one to three hours and may be acted out on stage under the guidance of a psychodrama director. |
